Repairable write-off cars at auction in Australia

A repairable write-off is a vehicle an insurer has assessed as uneconomical to repair, but which is allowed to be repaired and — depending on the state — returned to the road. Unlike a statutory write-off (parts or scrap only), it can be re-registered after the required inspection. They sell at salvage auction across Pickles, Manheim, IAAI, Grays and Slattery — tracked here in one place.

Frequently asked questions

What is a repairable write-off? expand_more

A repairable write-off is a vehicle an insurer has assessed as uneconomical to repair, but which is permitted to be repaired and — depending on the state — returned to the road. It is recorded on the Written-Off Vehicle Register (WOVR).

What is the difference between a repairable and a statutory write-off? expand_more

A repairable write-off may be repaired and (subject to state inspection rules) re-registered. A statutory write-off has damage so severe it generally can never be re-registered for road use anywhere in Australia and is for parts or scrap only.

Can you re-register a repairable write-off in Australia? expand_more

It depends on the state. Most states (VIC, QLD, SA, WA, TAS, ACT) allow it after the vehicle passes an identity and safety inspection, while NSW restricts re-registration of light repairable write-offs. Check the page for your state.

How do I check if a car is a write-off? expand_more

Run a PPSR check on the VIN — it tells you whether the vehicle is recorded on the national Written-Off Vehicle Register (WOVR) and its write-off category.
